China will start selling the first batch of its 1 trillion yuan ($138 billion) of ultra-long special sovereign bondsthis week, as officials ramp up effortsto support the world's No. 2 economy. The central government will begin a flurry of such sales this year by issuing 40 billion yuan of 30-year bonds Friday, according to a notice by the Ministry of Finance. That ended months of speculationover when the bonds -- the fourth of their kind in 26 years -- would be rolled out, after a broad plan was announced in March. The boost to gross domestic product could be as much as 1 percentage point, said Xing Zhaopeng at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group. Bonds with 20-year and 50-year tenors will be offered from May 24 and June 14, respectively.
Bloomberg reported the special sovereign bonds sale earlier Monday. The issuancewill include 300 billion yuan of 20-year bonds, 600 billion yuan of 30-year notes and 100 billion yuan in the 50-year tenor, according to people familiar with the matter. Investors responded positively to the bond sales news, with the benchmarkCSI 300 Index of onshore shares paring an earlier loss of 0.9% to close almost flat. Ding Shuang, chief economist for Greater China and North Asia at Standard Chartered Plc, forecast a 25-basis point reduction to the RRR to coincide withthe bond sale, and saw an increased chance of a loan prime ratecut.
